Lalibela and its churches

DAY 20

View Ethiopia on tia-saz-fitz's travel map.

We flew from Gondar to Lalibela and had a crazy bus ride up the mountain to the town expecting all our luggage to fall off the roof any second !

Constructed by King Lalibela 800 years ago, the rock-hewn churches are massive and amazing.

There are several tunnels connecting some of the churches.
One of them has absolutely no light and is VERY small and claustrophobic.
Torches are forbidden and we found ourselves panicking a bit and not knowing which way was up, down, forward or back !
This is us in the tunnels.

The Tukuls (houses) were made from the rock debris discarded from church construction.
